What is Motorball

Motorball is robotic football: two student-built robots per side, each steered by a student with a wireless controller, driving and pushing a pink ball into the opposing goal on a small octagonal pitch.

Students design, wire and program the robots themselves — motor control, driver response, and (in the Secondary category) an autonomous goalkeeper robot that has to track the ball on its own using onboard vision, no controller involved.

A match is two teams, two arenas running at once, and a referee at each pitch keeping score and the clock.

Every robot on the pitch is driven by a BBC micro:bit — the same pocket-sized computer used to teach coding in classrooms worldwide, here reading a wireless controller and driving motors in real time.
